NCAA, NAIA lacrosse programs sign record 53 Washington state prep grads

SEATTLE – The health of high school lacrosse is at an all-time high in Washington state with 53 graduates from the Class of 2013 joining NCAA and NAIA varsity lacrosse programs for the 2013-14 school year.

In what is the largest number of prep lacrosse players to be successfully recruited by NCAA and NAIA schools in the sport’s four decades of high school play in Washington state, student-athletes from 30 high schools and 17 public school districts will take up sticks at 45 different colleges and universities across 19 states.

School districts with graduates from this last spring’s class moving on to play NCAA and NAIA lacrosse include Bainbridge Island, Bellevue, Bethel, Edmonds, Enumclaw, Everett, Issaquah, Lake Washington, Lynden, Mercer Island, Mukilteo, Northshore, Puyallup, Seattle, Stanwood-Camano, Vancouver and White River along with private schools in Everett, Redmond, Sammamish, Seattle and Woodinville.

This spring, 10 from the state will join NCAA Division I lacrosse programs including Bellevue High School graduates Cole Johnson and Dakota Jones who received offers from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.  Others to earn Division I bids are Mercer Island’s Grant Preisler (Marquette), Hayden Reisman (St. John’s) and Tyler Sherper (Colgate).  Bainbridge High’s Jacob Knostman will play at Fairfield and Madeline Stevenson will play at Denver. Lakeside’s Peter Scott and Natalie Fox will both play for Brown while Justin Riggins of Seattle Prep will play for Richmond.

Another 43 from the Class of 2013 will join lacrosse programs at NCAA Division II and III schools along with NAIA schools.  Combined with the 79 from 35 state high schools that are expecting to take the field for club teams at their colleges and universities, a total of 132 will go on to play lacrosse at the next level in 2013-14.

“Opportunities for student-athletes to play lacrosse at the collegiate level are much greater today then when I played,” said Dave Low, president of the Washington State Chapter of US Lacrosse and a former player at Division III Middlebury College in the 1990s. “Historically the top NCAA programs were in the Ivy League and ACC,” he said.  “Today there are more scholarships for men and women in Division I programs all across the country and more Division II and III schools have added the sport.”

Fueling opportunities for state lacrosse players are the growing number of lacrosse programs being added by NCAA schools. According to the NCAA’s 2012-13 participation report released last week, growth of new lacrosse programs topped all NCAA sports with 26 men’s teams and 40 women’s teams added during the 2012-13 academic year.
