Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships Division I Team-by-Team Preview
Team-by-team preview of Washington state’s Division I boys high school lacrosse teams in the 2009 state championships tournamement. State tournament play begins Thursday, May 21. The Washington Boys Lacrosse State Championship games for Division I and II take place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Boys Division I Playoff Bracket

Boys Division I

1. Mercer Island (13-0-0 / 16-4-0) The four-time state champion Islanders have made it to the state championship game in seven of the last eight years missing only in 2008… the Islanders have the league’s second leading offense, outscoring their opponents 248 to 119 during the regular season… leading scorer is senior attackman Daniel Shields (second team All-State in 2008) with 36 goals, and 36 assists and 29 ground balls… goaltender Tucker Vassau leads the league with a 78 percent save percentage… Lacrosse at Mercer Island High School, which began play in 1993, is supported by the athletic department… Mercer Island is coached by Ian O’Hearn.

2. Issaquah (12-1-0 /16-2-0) The defending state champion Eagles have made it to the state title game in three of the last four years missing only in 2007… Issaquah is regarded as the league’s most prolific offense having outscored its opponent 227 to 82 during the regular season… leading scorer is senior midfielder Jordan Goldstein with 34 goals, 5 assists and 15 ground balls… Jake Director (senior midfield) and Connor McClain (LSM) were both second team All-State selections in 2008… Issaquah, which began play in 2002 is supported by its athletic department… Issaquah is coached by Brandon Fortier.

3. Bainbridge (11-2-0 / 13-3-0) Bainbridge Island High School is one of the most successful lacrosse programs in Washington state winning a combined 17 state titles between the boys and girls programs… the Spartan Boys Division I team was the 2008 state runner up and have been to the state championship game 14 times since 1991, winning the outright title 11 times including seven consecutive titles from 1994 – 2000… senior attackman Sam Snow leads the league in scoring with 47 goals, 21 assists and 47 ground balls… Snow was a first team All-State selection in 2008… the Spartans’ lacrosse program, which started play in 1989, is a club sport at Bainbridge Island High School… Bainbridge is coached by Jack Visco and Dejon Hush.

4. Curtis (9-4-0 / 11-5-0) Curtis is led by Armour All® All-American midfielder Landon Carr, the league’s fourth leading scorer, with 37 goals, 28 assists and 73 ground balls… Junior attackman Taylor Dean is eighth in league scoring with 34 goals, 8 assists and 20 ground balls… the Vikings’ lacrosse program, which began play in 1991, is supported by the Curtis High School athletic department… Curtis is coached by Kevin Leary.

5. Bellevue (9-4-0 / 11-6-0) Bellevue has made it to the state title game 14 times and has walked away with the title seven times… The Wolverines were last in the state title game in 1992 where they lost to Bainbridge… the Wolverines are led by senior attackman Kyle Mutzel who is fourth in the league in scoring with 36 goals and 20 assists… Bellevue High School’s lacrosse program, which is supported by its athletic department, began play in 1980 and is the second oldest lacrosse program in the state… Bellevue is coached by John Baumann.

6. Northshore (8-5-0 / 11-5-0) Northshore won the Division II state championship in 2008 and has moved into the more competitive Division I in 2009… junior midfielder Taylor Wisman, an All-Northeast Regional Team selection in 2008, is the league’s second leading scorer with 42 goals and 18 assists… Wisman collected 100 ground balls during the regular season… the club began play in 2007 and is the prototypical upstart lacrosse program as it draws student-athletes from multiple high schools; Inglemoor, Bothell and Woodinville High Schools… Northshore is coached by Steve Wisman.

7. Skyline (7-6-0 / 11-8-0) Skyline is led by senior midfielder Calvin Wiley… Wiley is third in the league in scoring with 39 goals and 16 assists… Wiley collected 62 ground balls during the regular season… the Eastside club began play in 2006 and is made up of student-athletes from Interlake, Newport and Sammamish High Schools along with the International School… Skyline is coached by Anthony Spinelli.

8. Vashon (6-7-0 / 6-7-0) Prior to moving to the more competitive Division I in 2006, Vashon Island High School has been to the Division II state title game four times, winning in 2005 and 1997… Vashon is led by senior attackman Cooper Loraas who is 11th in league scoring with 32 goals and 4 assists… the Vashon lacrosse program, which began play in 1992, is a club sport at Vashon High School… Vashon is coached by Charley Rosenberry.
