Dean nets six as Curtis upsets Lakeside in boys lacrosse

April 2, 2009

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash – Taylor Dean connected for six goals and Shawn Blaisdell netted five to lift underdog Curtis to an 18 – 6 Boys Division I high school lacrosse win over Lakeside, Thursday at Curtis High School near Tacoma, Wash.

Curtis opened scoring with an early goal at 11:19 of the first. However, heavily favored Lakeside came roaring back as Noah Harris and David Jamieson connected for goals just 50 seconds apart to give the Lions a 2 – 1 lead.

Curtis eventually took a 4 -3 edge to close out the first and scored two in the second to take a 6 – 4 advantage into the intermission, but was not operating at their full potential.

“We were a bit asleep in the first half. Lakeside was disciplined and came out ready to play,” said Curtis coach Kevin Leary.

At just 10:02 of the third, still not happy with his team’s performance, Leary called a time out to refocus his team. “We needed to start playing our game and stop chasing sticks,” he said. “We were playing the same stupid transition game we had going in the first.”

Less than 30 seconds later, Quinn Moody put Curtis on the board to take a 7 – 4 lead. Curtis then went on to score two short-handed goals on the way to a 6 – 0 third quarter rout of the Lions.

In the fourth, Curtis again turned up the heat, adding another six goals to Lakeside’s two nets.

Curtis goalkeeper Mitchell Homeyer (3-1-0) had 15 saves and Johnny Shapton scooped up seven ground balls to advance Curtis to 3-1-0 on the season. Lakeside dropped to 1-5-0.
