Beck’s short-handed OT goal gives Mukilteo boys lacrosse win

March 30, 2009

MUKILTEO, Wash. – Mukilteo’s Mitchell Beck scored short-handed with just 2:20 remaining in overtime to drop Snohomish 11 – 10 in Boys Division II high school lacrosse action Monday, at Explorer Middle School in Mukilteo, Wash.

Playing a man down and carefully protecting a 10 – 10 overtime stalemate, Mukilteo’s defense cleared a Snohomish shot to Karl Thompson who found Beck alone, just 10 feet in front of the Snohomish cage. On a turn-and-fake, Beck beat Snohomish goaltender Loren Danielson low on the left side for the game winning goal.

The game got underway with both teams trading shots and the lead. Following one quarter of play, Snohomish and Mukilteo were knotted at two goals apiece.

In the second, the scoring was fast and furious as Snohomish’s Nathan Wirtz scored at 11:38, setting off a two-and-a-half minute, five goal burst by both teams. With Mukilteo holding a one-goal advantage for over six minutes in the later stages of the second, Snohomish’s Nicholas Hund knotted the game at five with just 2:58 remaining in the half.

In the third, Hund again converted, giving Snohomish a 6 – 5 advantage and momentum at 7:36. However, Mukilteo’s Riley Wanzer came charging back at 4:12 to tie the game at six, and again at 2:35 to go ahead by one, before Snohomish again tied the game with 1:54 in the third.

Early in the fourth, Mukilteo struck first with a two-goal burst by Wanzer. But Snohomish again retaliated with two of their own. The two again traded goals to close-out the fourth with Snohomish’s Justin Jones striking last, beating Starkenburg with six seconds remaining to force the overtime period.

Starkenburg had 10 saves in the win for Mukilteo, while Danielson had 24 saves for Snohomish.
